In case you're thinking to yourself "didn't I just hear about this a while back?" the answer is no. It's now a preference pane instead of a mere QuickTime plugin to make administration easier, and it fixes several bugs as well. The a52codec is now a part of the standard release (so if you've installed it with previous versions of Perian you may want to remove it from /Library/Quicktime). The new release adds support for a bunch of new formats, including MKV, HuffYUV, Vorbis, VP3, i263, and others. Perian 0.5 changed that for the most part, and now the much-anticipated 1.0 version is here. DivX, XviD, MS-MPEG4 and others were only available via a collection of third-party plugins for QuickTime or applications such as VLC. Not that long ago, it took a fair amount of work to ensure your Mac could play all kinds of media, rather than just the standard QuickTime formats.
